URL Alias converter - instructions

To use the converter, first, find the “prefs.js” file in the C:\Documents and Settings\Your name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xyz123.default folder. Open it with a text editor such as Windows Notepad, then click File/Save As, and save it as Prefs.txt. Now find the line of text that starts user_pref("urlalias.

One by one, copy the aliases and their matching URLs into the appropriate boxes of the converter, and click the “convert” button. Then copy the resulting text strings to the bottom of your text file, one string per line.

The resulting strings should like something like this:

<DT><A HREF="www.msn.com" SHORTCUTURL="msn">www.msn.com</A>

<DT><A HREF="www.google.com" SHORTCUTURL="G">www.google.com</A>

When you’ve converted all of your existing aliases to text strings at the bottom of your text file, exit Firefox.

Then, back in your text file, copy the group of text strings you’ve just added to the bottom of the file – select it, and then Ctrl-C or Edit/Copy it.

Now save and close the Prefs.txt file.

In the same directory, open the file bookmarks.html, again using the text editor. Scroll through the blur of text at the top of the file until you reach a number of text lines that each begin with “<DT>”. (For this purpose, treat each <DT> string as a single line of text, even if it wraps into an additional line.) Position your cursor at the end of one such <DT> line and add a blank line of text. Then paste the strings you copied from the Prefs.txt file into that blank line.

Save the bookmarks.html file, close your text editor, and go back into Firefox. You should now be able to navigate to a website simply by typing the alias into the URL address box.
